Volunteer with the KidSafe Writers’ Room

Join us to help kids build literacy skills and self-esteem through fun creative-writing projects and tutoring!

We could not run the Writers’ Room without volunteer support, and we currently need help with these two programs:

1. After-school tutoring
Until June 14, 2012, Monday to Thursday, 2:45 to 4:45 p.m.
Tutors work one-on-one with students from kindergarten to grade 7 to complete homework from all subjects. We also read, write and play educational (and fun!) games.

2. Summer-break programming
July 3 to August 24, 2012, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
This summer, we’ll be sparking kids’ imaginations, and using games, crafts and writing activities to enhance literacy skills while having fun. Mentors will work with small groups of children, and we’ll run programming at five KidSafe sites in East Vancouver for more than 250 kids.

Volunteers can also help the children by devising and running literacy activities and games, and lending a hand with the administrative side of the program.

We encourage volunteer applications from a wide range of backgrounds—publishing, visual arts, theatre, journalism, education, music, math and more.

The Writers' Room offers a flexible schedule for tutors. Many of our tutors make a commitment of volunteering on the same day(s) each week, but you could help out whenever your schedule allows—be it two hours per month or the entire summer.

All volunteers must submit a police records check and two references, and attend a brief training session.

Volunteering with the Writers’ Room is a great way to gain experience working with children and meet other wonderful, like-minded folks. So if you want to give some of your time to a worthwhile cause and help children with literacy, please apply below to join our team of mentors!

Raoul and a young reader of his own

“My favourite thing [about the Writers’ Room] is getting to play hangman and hearing the awesome stories and poems that the students write. . . It seriously makes me want to put more sharks in my poems."
—Raoul

“He's a really nice guy. He’s a great friend, and I really like him because he’s kind of mysterious to me sometimes.”
—Mark, age 8
