Within our first year of operation, the KidSafe Writers’ Room at Queen Alexandra Elementary School has:
But, frankly, we’re bursting at the seams in our small classroom at Queen Alexandra, and the demand for our free programming is more than we can accommodate in that space. Right now, only children registered at Queen Alexandra can attend the Writers’ Room after-school tutoring program, while other students in East Vancouver struggle with homework at home, often without an adult who has the time or ability to help them. And our programming is limited by the school’s restricted hours, too.
So we’re opening a second location! This location will be outside of the school and easily accessible to inner-city students. There, kids of all ages, from all different schools, will receive after-school homework help, and attend creative writing workshops in the evenings and on weekends. Second-location programming is scheduled to begin in fall 2012. And, of course, all of our programming will still be free for the children and families we serve.
As part of our expansion, the Writers' Room has now become the Writers’ Exchange, a project of Tides Canada Initiatives Society. As a registered Canadian operating charity, Tides Canada Initiatives Society receives donations and provides charitable tax receipts for gifts to the Writers’ Exchange.

- helped more than 100 inner-city children complete homework and creative writing projects
- trained more than 120 tutors, who work one-on-one with the children
- and outside, of the Writers’ Room itself, we have made literacy fun and exciting for 175 kids through games and art!
